Honda SmartCharge™ Service
Terms of Service
Effective Date: April 5, 2021
Honda SmartCharge™ Service (“Honda SmartCharge”) is provided by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (“AHM” or “we” or “us”) and makes certain services and programs available to you, including the ability to calculate the optimum times to charge your electric vehicle (your “Vehicle”) to reduce the impact on the electrical grid. By indicating acceptance below or by otherwise using Honda SmartCharge, you acknowledge that you have read and agree to the following Terms of Service (“Terms”):
- Eligibility. To participate in Honda SmartCharge, your Vehicle must be continuously enrolled in HondaLink® registered services (the “Registered Services”).

- (the “Registered Services Terms”) and the American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Privacy Policy, which is available at honda.com/privacy-policy (the “Honda Privacy Policy”). These Terms, including the Registered Services Terms and the Honda Privacy Policy, are binding between you and AHM and govern your participation in Honda SmartCharge. For this purpose, the term “Registered Services” in the Registered Services Terms includes Honda SmartCharge. You should carefully review the Registered Services Terms and the Honda Privacy Policy before using Honda SmartCharge.
- Managed Charging Feature.
- With a little information from you, AHM and its service providers are able to calculate the optimum times to charge your Vehicle to reduce the impact on the electrical grid and to produce a charging schedule for your Vehicle. AHM, in coordination with its service provider(s), will update the charging schedule for your Vehicle in real-time based on your desired charging times and electrical grid adjustment factors, such as electricity market conditions. AHM’s management of your charging schedule is referred to as “Managed Charging”.
- To determine the optimum charging schedule for your Vehicle, which we refer to as your “SmartCharge Schedule”, AHM will need to access the following information from your Vehicle, which AHM will share with its service provider(s):
- Vehicle location
- Current battery state of charge
- Charger power level
- Battery temperature
- In the HondaLink® mobile application, you will be able to add and edit saved charging locations and charge times, and your Vehicle’s SmartCharge Schedule will be based upon your selections for the above options, electrical grid adjustment factors, and your Vehicle location when you plug in. Managed Charging will be available only at your designated locations.
d. Managed Charging may result in real-time changes to your Vehicle’s SmartCharge Schedule, including a delayed charging time from time of plug in, stopping charge during a window of high grid demand, starting charge during periods of low grid demand, or other similar modifications. You can view your Vehicle’s current SmartCharge Schedule in the HondaLink® mobile application.
e. At all times, Managed Charging will attempt to honor the end charging times supplied by you, such that the Vehicle is available for use at the requested state of charge level at the desired time. However, you acknowledge and understand that you are accepting the risk that there may be errors in the charge scheduling, which could result in, among other things, not having a sufficient charge to reach your destination, increased charging costs at a time-of-use meter, and delays in completion of the charging.
f. Within the HondaLink® mobile application, you may opt out of your current SmartCharge Schedule via the “Stop SmartCharge” button, which is displayed when a SmartCharge session is in progress, or the “Charge Now” button, which is displayed before a SmartCharge session has begun (for example, if you needed to charge immediately to make an unexpected trip).
- Honda SmartCharge Programs. From time to time, AHM will offer Honda SmartCharge programs in which eligible participants have the opportunity to earn rewards. You will be notified if a Honda SmartCharge program is available in your area and what rewards may be available if you sign up and are eligible to participate in the program. The amount of rewards you can earn may vary based on the program rules, including your charging amount, rate, and frequency, as well as whether you opt-out out of a SmartCharge session. At the time of program enrollment or registration, you will be provided with a copy of, and will be required to accept, the applicable program terms in order to participate.
- Honda SmartCharge Rewards.
- Sign-Up Rewards. Depending on the Honda SmartCharge program, you may be eligible to receive a reward just for signing up to participate in the Honda SmartCharge program. When offered, sign-up rewards are limited to one per person even if you sign up for a program more than once.
b. Reward Points. If you participate in a Honda SmartCharge program, any Honda SmartCharge rewards that you earn will be added to your “Pending Points” balance, which can be viewed on the SmartCharge Activity page of the HondaLink® mobile application. - Cash Payment. Reward points can be converted into cash and paid out to you. When your reward points are available to be redeemed, you can select the “Redeem Rewards” button and provide a contact e-mail. JP Morgan Chase, our payment solution provider for the Honda SmartCharge Service, will then reach out to you to establish direct deposit into your bank account.
- Tree Planting Program. In the alternative, you can elect to forgo your cash reward and instead use your points to support AHM’s tree-planting program, in which case, AHM will donate the cash value of your used points to plant trees. To do this, please select “Plant a Tree” on the Honda SmartCharge Rewards page of the HondaLink® mobile application.
- Sign-Up Rewards. Depending on the Honda SmartCharge program, you may be eligible to receive a reward just for signing up to participate in the Honda SmartCharge program. When offered, sign-up rewards are limited to one per person even if you sign up for a program more than once.
- Termination. You may elect to terminate your participation in Honda SmartCharge at any time by selecting “Unenroll” from SmartCharge under Manage SmartCharge. If you terminate your participation in Honda SmartCharge, the HondaLink® mobile application functionality will return to the functionality available prior to your participation in Honda SmartCharge.
- Conflicting Terms. In the event of any conflict between these Terms and the Registered Services Terms or the Honda Privacy Policy, these Terms will govern for Honda SmartCharge.
