Xcel Energy Charging Perks Pilot

The Xcel Energy Charging Perks pilot program helps Clarity drivers charge up during times of day that help the energy grid operate more efficiently and use more renewable energy. You’ll get a $100 gift card from Xcel Energy just for enrolling. Then, if you are eligible to participate, all you have to do is plug in and Honda will do the rest. By managing your vehicle charging, Honda will balance charging your EV at the best time for the energy grid and making sure your vehicle is ready to go when you need it. If you have additional questions about Xcel Energy’s Charging Perks Pilot, please see the Pilot FAQs available below.

Why sign up for Xcel Energy Charging Perks Pilot Program?

It pays. Xcel Energy will send you a $100 gift card just for signing up. Keep participating in the pilot program and Xcel Energy will pay you $100 more at the end of each year if you use a level 2 charger, or $50 more if you use a level 1 charger.

It’s clean. By charging at the right times of day, you’ll help use even more renewable energy as we work together to build smarter energy infrastructure.

Xcel Charging Perks Pilot Program FAQs

Xcel Energy provides customers safe, reliable, affordable energy that they need and expect. With a vision to provide 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050, Xcel Energy is helping drive the growth of electric vehicles to further reduce carbon emissions, save customers money, and lead to cleaner air in our communities.

You are eligible to participate in Xcel Energy Charging Perks if you…

  • Charge your Clarity at home
  • Typically charge your Clarity at night
  • Receive electric service from Xcel Energy at your home

In the years to come, we expect there will be significant growth in the adoption of electric vehicles. This pilot program will help us understand how we can effectively manage the growth of EVs in ways that can make the grid more efficient and better able to use renewable energy.

Electricity costs more to produce when demand is high. During these times of high demand, we also typically rely on electricity sources that use fossil fuels, which are less environmentally friendly. If you can shift the charging of your vehicle to times when demand is low, it helps to better manage our energy grid, use more renewable energy, and reduce investments in new power plants.

Through this pilot program, Xcel Energy will study the opportunities that smart charging provides to more effectively utilize our renewable energy resources to charge vehicles. The pilot program will do this by sending information to Honda when the grid has an over-abundance of wind power. Honda then uses this information to create a vehicle charging schedule which maximizes the use of that renewable wind power. If we can successfully demonstrate how EVs can help us use more wind power, in the future, we can leverage the same capability during times when solar production is very high.

After Xcel Energy validates your eligibility for the pilot program, we’ll send you a link you can use to select a $100 e-gift card from over 80 popular merchants (see list of merchants here). Keep participating in the pilot program and you’ll get up to $100 more at the end of 2021 and again in 2022. Your year-end reward depends on whether you charge at home with a Level 1 or Level 2 charging station.

After receiving your enrollment confirmation email from Xcel Energy, please allow 1-2 week for your e-gift card to arrive in your inbox.

If you have any problems or questions redeeming or using your e-gift card, please contact Tango Card customer service at cs@tangocard.com

The pilot program is not designed to affect your electric bill. Customers will receive gift cards for enrollment and participation, but your electric rate will remain the same.

If you are on a time-of-use rate, simply enter your off peak hours as your Charge Window. Honda SmartCharge™ will then create a SmartCharge Schedule that will prioritize your vehicle charging during those off-peak times. Depending on how you previously charged your vehicle, this pilot program may provide additional savings on your bill if more of your charging during the pilot program is completed during the off-peak time period.

Honda will create an optimized charging schedule based on your preferences and information from Xcel Energy about the best times to charge. This schedule will be sent to your car automatically, so all you need to do is plug in when you get home and your car takes care of it from there.

The pilot program rules allow you to change your charging schedule whenever you need to without affecting your program rewards or program status. Your needs are always the first priority and you are able to override your SmartCharge schedule at any time, for any reason.

Honda will provide charging information about your vehicle to Xcel Energy so we can evaluate the benefits of smart charging.
